15 habits of Great Writers - Declare

Today is the first day of Jeff Goins' Becoming a Great Writer series.  I am looking forward to this but I can tell already that it is going to be a stretch for me.  Day 1 and I am already faced with a HUGE challenge...Declaring myself a writer.

I have always thought of a writer as someone who is already published.  Even when my boyfriend has told other people that I am a writer, I tend to cringe.  I don't feel worthy.  When I first started blogging I was so excited until I realized that people were actually going to READ what I had written.  YIKES!

Jeff says that if you have written, then you are already a writer.  So I am here today to declare to you that I AM A WRITER!  Hopefully we will see if it is as they say, admitting is the hardest part.
Oh, maybe that is talking about something else :)

I have already talked to my dad and co-workers about my blog, but they have politely blown me off.  My aunt has shared her writing experiencees with me and encouraged me along the way.  I am not comfortable sharing my writing with them yet, but hopefully one day I will.  Until then, I will keep putting thoughts down on paper.

I am looking forward to a challenging 15 days.  Are you up for the challenge?  If so, you can get more info and sign up here

  4. Sounds like a nice series. :) You need confidence. My only real writing was some journalism I had a cute little weekly Pet Care column in my local paper in the 90's. :) I am not very confident either, and am working on a story. Actually I have some typed chapters. My blog started off kind of newsy, that was all I knew how to write. :/ I was always searching for news topics that I thought would spark a debate. In December decided for another turn on it. :) I started a little story about my family who don't read mine either. :)

  8. Oh yes, you're a writer! I remember getting over that obstacle myself. It's a big one. I was "closet" for so long!

I always think of "authors" as being published, but those of us who write regularly as "writers." I know some people don't agree with me, but oh well. That's how I define it. :)

Best of luck on your journey!

  10. You have come to the right community to declare yourself a writer. Family members are not always interested until they see it make money. Sometimes writing does not "pay off". But it is a wonderfully creative outlet for expression :)

Good luck on this journey :)

  11. Yes--you are a writer--great for your boyfriend who is telling people. But I know what you mean about feeling weird about it. I was too-for a LONG time. None of my family visits my blog--ever. :)
Now go tell all you meet 'I'm a writer!'
